March is named for the Roman God of War, Mars. It was the time of year to resume military campaigns that had been interrupted by winter. March also brings the first day of spring with the vernal equinox. We wait with anticipation for signs of spring-buds on the trees, forsythias about to bloom, daffodils and crocuses peaking their way through the soil. We also have a number of celebrations during March.
March 17 is Saint Patrick’s Day, and we wear and decorate with shamrocks because the saint used the shamrock to explain the trinity. One plant, three leaves, all unified and one, though separate and distinct. The trinity is one.
March 19 is Saint Joseph’s Day. A saint who reminds us of the importance and role of the family and fathers in society.
March is a paradox. It is named after the God of War, yet it signifies rebirth, spring, and the importance of unity and relationships. Perhaps we are invited to see March as a reminder of the wars we face within ourselves, as well as without. There is much conflict and confusion around us daily and in the world today.
To whom shall we go for peace and healing? Our relationships are the key. It is only through relationships we can be truly healed. Saint Patrick’s legacy is he gave us the answer in the shamrock – we must be united to one another and work in unison in our relationships with the source in the divine.
Saint Joseph does not speak in the bible, but his example of trusting in God, our dreams, making our work sacred, doing for others, protecting and caring for those we love, has lasting significance. Yes, there may be war, but we can fight it and transform it by seeing the beauty of creation in spring, following the universal lessons of Saint Patrick and Saint Joseph and, of course, celebrating life.
At the DePalo Law Firm, we know when to fight and litigate. We also know when to mediate, negotiate, and to collaborate. We offer counsel, creative problem solving, as well as knowledge and experience in the law. We offer services, such as mediation, collaborative law, legal counsel, and parent coordination to serve our clients. Service is key at our firm.
In conclusion, here is my advice on how best to celebrate March.
1. Have your corned beef and cabbage, green beer, and Irish soda bread (my favorite) and drink to life.
2. Have a glass of red wine, a good Italian meal, and an espresso with a zeppola and sfinge, and love and protect those closest to you.
Remember, wars can be won.
