It is hard to imagine it is already December, and 2022 is coming to a close.  The days are shorter, colder, darker, and the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season is upon us.  How do we not lose ourselves and our minds in the next few weeks?  How do we not become overstressed or depressed because of all the distractions, commitments, expectations, and disappointments?  How do we enjoy the holidays if we have lost loved ones or are no longer with our spouse and children as we used to be, because of divorce, death or illness?  

            Self-care is very important.  It is important anytime of the year, but especially during this time of the year.  Taking care of yourself by getting enough rest, eating nutritious food and enjoying the traditional delicacies, and sweets, yet, not binging or overindulging in holiday treats, alcohol, and food, and carving out time for quiet, solitude, and self-reflection is of paramount importance.  We can lose what is really important. 

            To try and keep yourself on track think of think of Christmas and holidays in this way. This time of year is synonymous with presents.  Buying, ordering, receiving, and wrapping are all part of the giving process.  This year, when you think of presents, think of giving yourself and those closest to you the gift of PRESENCE.  What do I mean by presence?  Being present and attentive to yourself – acknowledging what you need, as well as being attentive to how you feel, and doing the same to those we spend time with.  Be present to your children, friends, colleagues, and family.  Really listen to them.  Ask questions about how they are feeling.  What their fears and hopes are.  And really “hear” them.  Presence instead of presents may be the best gift you can ever give or receive.

            And when you are alone, allow yourself to be present to that inner source and voice within.  It is what will center you and ground you.  Begin with breathing in and out or say a short prayer and get in touch with your soul.
