“Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgiving, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.” William Arthur Wards
“The struggle ends when gratitude begins.” Neale Donald Walsch.
Thanksgiving is upon us. A time for us to take some time to reflect where we are in our lives and what blessings we have received as well as what we are grateful for. Thanksgiving is a holiday everyone can celebrate together no matter what faith you are. Who does not enjoy all or some part of the Thanksgiving meal? I look forward to anything pumpkin!
If you are struggling due to certain life circumstances whether it be a divorce or the loss of a loved one you can lose sight of what you are thankful for and the importance of practicing gratitude. We can forget what is truly important and focus on what is “wrong” in our lives rather than what gifts we have. It is so true that you do not realize what you have until it is gone. Good health is the perfect example.
One of the ways to best maintain a sense of gratitude and joy is to think about what you are grateful for. The simple and ordinary is often overlooked by us. Practicing gratitude is a habit you can develop. One way to begin is to keep a gratitude journal or list 3 to 5 things every day you are grateful for. What made you smile or comforted you.
I try to keep a gratitude journal. Every night before bed I recall the day and what little gifts I received. Many times, I am thankful for the same things; still it is a reminder for me of how much I have been given. Every day is a new beginning. Some of the things I am grateful for are my cup of coffee in the morning, the rising sun, my cat who curls up on my lap, a hot shower, a hug from my husband, a good night’s sleep, and a glass of wine with a delicious meal. We all need selfcare and these little pleasures nourish our bodies and soul.
When we are down or face an unexpected change, we seem to focus on the negative. Developing a sense of gratitude and counting your blessings will help you realize that there is light at the end of the tunnel and every day is an opportunity for joy. Just become aware and you will be amazed. A Blessed Thanksgiving to all.
